Student Opportunities
Opportunities for Law Students
Every year, PLEIS-NB works with multiple law students from the University of New Brunswick and the Université de Moncton. We offer a range of opportunities to increase access to justice, learn about plain language legal communication, and build your professional network.
Summer Employment
Every year, PLEIS-NB hires between two to four law students to assist our Fredericton office (depending on our funding and the work available). Both UNB and U de M students are eligible for these positions, with remote work available for U de M students. We accept applications from both 1L and 2L students. The standard summer term is 14 weeks long, with full-time hours at a standard rate set by the organization each year and disclosed in the job posting.
Summer students can expect to work on projects like:
- Updating our legal publications to reflect changes in the law;
- Drafting new publications;
- Answering general legal questions from the public, submitted by email;
- Helping design, plan, or deliver workshops on legal topics;
- Drafting short briefs on new legal developments for the “What’s New” section of our website (for example, “Residential Tenancies Act: Rent Cap Amendment,”;
- Occasionally, helping with inventory management or other routine administrative tasks that are typical of work in the non-profit environment; and
- Other special projects, as needed.
The next deadline for summer employment applications is March 8, 2024. To apply, please send a cover letter and resume to pleisnb@web.ca, with the subject line “Summer Student Application: [your name]”.

Pro Bono Students Canada placements
PLEIS-NB typically hosts 1-2 PBSC students from UNB and U de Moncton, depending on demand and availability. For more information, contact your local PBSC chapter.
Clinical and experiential learning placements
In general, PLEIS-NB is open to accepting student placements in any case where students receive either (a) academic credits, through a recognized placement program with an Atlantic law school, or (b) compensation, whether from PLEIS directly or through another funding source (such as a public interest honorarium through their law school).
Historically, we have hosted clinical and experiential learning placements. We are open to partnerships both through the academic year and the summer. Interested students or faculties of law should contact us directly. In either case, we ask for at least 2 weeks’ notice before any relevant application deadlines.
Opportunities for Other Students (outside law schools)
From time to time, PLEIS-NB accepts volunteers or student placements from students in law-adjacent or complementary programs, like social work, education, and justice studies. We consider these opportunities on a case-by-case basis.
