Tenant Information Program

The Tenant Information Program provides New Brunswick tenants with reliable, bilingual legal information on tenancy law and support to act on their legal rights. It is funded by the Department of Justice Canada’s Tenant Protection Fund to operate through 2029.

The program includes 4 new offerings:

  1. Legal information resources for tenants on this website,
  2. Tenant questions answered through PLEIS NB’s Legal Info Line,
  3. Free workshops on tenants’ rights and responsibilities, and
  4. Pop-up Tenant Legal Advice Clinics operating across New Brunswick each summer.

Legal information for tenants

Tenants can now access tenancy information and resources on our website. Explore our newest legal information pages and learn about common housing issues like:

Tenant questions answered through the Legal Info Line

Tenants can call or email PLEIS NB’s toll-free Legal Info Line and speak with a lawyer to get answers to their questions about tenancy law.

The Legal Info Line does not give legal advice. We can answer questions about the law in New Brunswick and tell you about sources of free or low-cost legal help or other kinds of support.

The Legal Info Line service is offered in both French and English:

Please leave us a message and we will return your call within 2 business days. Most people hear back from us sooner than that. If we have not contacted you after 2 business days, we might have had a problem with your contact information. Please call or email us again.

We will only call the person who left us the message. For safety and privacy reasons, please do not leave a message asking us to call a third party. If you are calling on behalf of a friend, family member, or client, please leave your name and contact information. We will contact you to determine how we can help the person. In your message, please tell us:

  • Your first name,
  • The general subject or question,
  • Your phone number (please say it twice), and
  • The best time to reach you when we call back.

If you don’t want us to leave a message in your voicemail, please tell us in your message. Otherwise, we will leave a voicemail if we can’t reach you.

Free tenants’ rights workshops

PLEIS NB offers free workshops on housing law in collaboration with the NB Coalition for Tenants’ Rights. Any organization in New Brunswick can request a workshop, either in-person or online, in French or English. Please email us at info@legalinfonb.ca to make a request.

The workshops will cover topics like:

If we have any upcoming workshops open to the public, they will be listed here.

Pop-up Tenant Legal Advice Clinics

Each summer, New Brunswick tenants can get free legal advice on housing issues at pop-up Tenant Legal Advice Clinics around the province!

The Clinics run from May through July. Our summer 2026 schedule will be available in the spring.

How it works

You don’t need an appointment to use the Tenant Legal Advice Clinic. Clinics operate on a walk-in basis. Come early if you can.

You will meet with a law student who is supervised by a lawyer. You can meet for up to 30 minutes. They can give you summary legal advice about issues like rent increases, evictions, or repairs and maintenance.

Bring any paperwork you have received from your landlord or any other documents related to your case. You must also bring a piece of government ID, like a driver’s license.

Service is available in both French and English.

If you have questions about the Tenant Legal Advice Clinic, call us at 506-452-6313 or email us at info@legalinfonb.ca. If your organization would like to host a Tenant Legal Advice Clinic this summer, please contact us. We will prioritize locations outside of Fredericton.
